Who Is this "Cally"?
Cally is an artist pursuing a career in art. She is non-neurotypical and grew up trying to cope with it. All her life she has struggled with ADHD and the stigma around it. In middle-school she found solace in art, it gave her a way to express herself and keep herself occupied and stop herself from bouncing off the walls.
Cally grew up in Longmont, Colorado where she was known in her school for being somewhat of a troublemaker and wasn't able to sit still. In 2nd grade, she was diagnosed with ADHD and started taking medication for it which seemed to help her calm down a lot, but for her brain, it didn't change, the mood of her thoughts simply changed from positive to negative. She kept to herself more often and started getting bullied for being different. She never cared much for gender norms and
after being on the medication that seemed to become even more prevalent. She joined boy scouts at an early age where she learned many things about how to wander the outdoors and how to carve wood (although she only made pointy sticks until much later).Â
In 5th grade, she moved to Portland Oregon where she fell in love with the green landscape and the temperate climate. For her, it was a welcome change of scenery compared to the arid grasslands of her hometown. After she moved her depression and anxiety got worse and she was no longer able to hide it, so she started going to a psychiatrist who diagnosed her with depression. Around the same time, she started to pick up art as a way to occupy her mind while teachers were talking or if she was bored. From there her story became one of progress and refinement, constantly working on art projects and sketches, and eventually deciding to pursue it as a career. eventually, in high school, she came out as trans and began the route to feeling comfortable in her own skin.
Her constant battle with depression, ADHD, and dysphoria is a constant fuel for her art. Her art is often a vehicle for her feeling which she feels too embarrassed or stressed to talk about.
